The latest season of Overwatch 2 dramatically changed the way the game is played by giving DPS heroes the ability to reduce the recovery their enemies receive. The ripple effect of this change left many tanks and support heroes struggling to survive.
In a blog post reflecting on the changes, game director Aaron Keller admits that the amount of power given to DPS heroes "may have gone a little too far." Even as a tank, he said, "there can be moments when exposing yourself feels a little too risky, or when your health burns out faster than expected while being healed.
Next week's mid-season patch will drop the reduction in healing by DPS heroes from 20% to 15% and make additional changes to "make all heroes feel survivable."
These changes include:
Wrecking Ball, a tank hero who can swing around the map and slam into his prey, will receive a "small tweak" in Season 10.
Keller added that the team is "already talking about some fixes we'll make in Season 10." We already know that Venture, a new DPS hero with the ability to move underground, will be released in that season, and that may be when the multi-objective mode Clash makes its debut.
Full patch notes will be released in the next few days, but if little has been done to the DPS hero, I see these changes as going a long way toward stabilizing the game. The biggest problem was survivability against DPS heroes who could maintain anti-healing debuffs on themselves. I never knew when I would be tickled by damage or instantly obliterated. With a little more healing output and a stronger tank, the DPS hero's dominance over the game should loosen and other roles will be able to enjoy it.
