My abiotic factors in recent weeks have been a cure for burnout survival. I never wanted to see another craft bench again, but all I really needed was a truly fresh perspective on survival craft to get on board. The first thing that drew me was the setting of Abiotic, a post-disaster underground lab inspired by Half-Life's Black Mesa facility.

No trees can be felled in the cold-resounding hall of the Gate Cascade Research Facility. For Deep Field games founder Geoff "Zag" Keene, these deep but "simple systems" were crucial to making the survival game he actually wanted to play.

"So I've always had this interest in survival games, but I'm not a big fan of survival games," Keane told PC Gamer in an interview last week. "I play them with friends, but I always find them to be very grindy and kind of boring.

One of Deep Field's early goals was to dismantle the typical loops of so many survival games (felling trees, building bases and maintaining them), and the part they liked

"I liked the exploration of [survival craft], I liked the adventure, and I also liked the role-play of it." . I like to sit around a campfire and cool off with your buds, you know, and I think a lot of games don't promote it much."That's why sitting is one of the great features of abiotic factors. It's actually how to rest and heal in many ways. We wanted to promote that environment."

We need to eat, drink and rest, but not so often. If you take a nap or drop the deuce, you will see a mini-game, which will make your time faster. You only need to make the tools once and repair them easily. Keane said his team was inspired by another unorthodox survival game, Project Zomboid, and its "Moodle" system.

"We didn't want to have a lot of meters, we wanted to have emotions," Keane said. "If a character gets sick, you need to understand or reconsider what you did to make yourself sick, such as eating raw meat or spitting," Keane said. "I really feel very strongly that the game is better when it tells you less. That's why we don't have meters everywhere."

It has, however, several meters. A HUD pop-up and voice line will tell you when you're hungry or it's time for the toilet, but you can call the status screen to see the meter for your core body functions. "In fact, some people on the development team were pushing me to show the meter on your health screen. I fought them both, but in the end it was a better idea, so I lost."

Role play takes place as a matter of course in abiotic factors. Beyond the basics, you are rewarded with a non-obvious buff for not only surviving but also taking care of yourself. When you are at your base and away from danger, you get the remaining bonus of "Sweet House of the house". Sitting in a chair speeds up healing, just as you relax in the warmth of a heater. Filling your belly with a good soup will slow down your hunger with a special "Souper Satisfied" effect, and even minor clothing like a chef's apron will keep the wearer from getting dirty with blood or alien guts.

"Making everything important in the game, even the little ones, is our philosophy," Keene said.

These simple simulations are often paired with the search for abiotic factors. You have first fallen on the first floor of the gate Cascade research facility. "Until a few years ago, I hadn't even heard the word [immersive Sim]," he said. "I understand what it means on paper, I understand what the game is considered an immersive sim, but I think abiotic factors

but fans keep saying that the Keane Aviotic Factor reminds them of their immersive sim favorites. He appreciates the kind comparison and is beginning to accept the label, whether intentional or not.

"It's weird to think I accidentally made an immersive sim. I'm not sure if it was a deliberate design act to make it [that way], but this is the game I want to play."Abiotic factors are so many built from scratch as a game I think would just be fun.

Keane also talked about how the unique setting of the Abiotic Factor sometimes backfires when introducing it to players. To Survival Craft fans expecting screenshots of woods, dirt and log cabins, the game about a lab bald scientist is right up the alley.

"I think some people who are familiar with survival craft games will think, 'I don't understand this game'. This is too alien to me."So we definitely had that problem," he said. "It's definitely tricky. That's why we show a lot of crafts in the trailer. It's a reason to show that people break things and pick up resources, even if it's boring.

"It was quite a fight, but it was a fun fight. I think it's a creative challenge. And it's really exciting because we're getting closer to 300,000 copies now, which seems like we've explained enough enough to enough people."

Not bad for survival games that don't look like typical survival games.

There's already a lot in the early access version of Abiotic Factor, and it's just getting bigger. In May, deep fields added cheese making and wireless telephones, making long distance tuning a breeze. The other 2 main wings of the facility are set to come with plenty of "goodies" and new secrets ahead of the 2024 1.0 launch, which is planned for the second half of the year. Deepfield's public road map is full of what I want to get, like the hydroelectric sector, jetpacks, laser systems, and more vehicles. But Keane says his team is also looking beyond the launch.

"We have a 1.0 goal, but we also have a 1.1 goal."
