Adventure games like Inkblot Obra-Dinn The Collage Atlas was originally released for iOS only in 2020, but when Apple Arcade's contract expired last year, the impressive pen and ink game became unplayable. To keep it alive, its creator released a Steam version last month.
John Evelyn, the designer of this postmodern duo tone walking simulator, started by creating a rendering of each game world object in Unity and painstakingly drawing each texture by hand.
In an interview with The Verge, Evelyn discussed how she fell in love with the art of pen and ink: "I come out in the middle with all the incidental details."The ink blot visuals give a rich depth of texture, tactile and something personal. Evelyn's brutally honest approach to the artwork embraces the persistence of ink and all the mistakes that come with it and gives an incredibly unique look
The approach to its persistence, however, has not been taken over by the world of game publishing. Collage Atlas began as iOS-only before it finished running on Apple Arcade, a subscription-based game library.
It would have been another casualty of the ongoing siege of the gaming industry on the art itself, but Evelyn had been prepared to wash his hands of everything and leave the collage atlas in Purgatory, but he eventually decided to port the game to PC and he owes it to his past self who put so much work into the game I told Verge that I felt that.
"This is the sad thing about the way our kind of creative medium is going: works don't have any kind of persistence — they just disappear
