Veterans of Temtem are developing a 1-4 player narrative survival game inspired by "Breath of the Wild".

If you're looking for something a little Zelda-esque, Oppidum might be worth a look: a Breath of the Wild-inspired 1- to 4-player "narrative adventure with survival elements" developed by EP Games, including former members of Temtem developer Crema, and will be released later this year.

Oppidum takes place in the land of Insule, a "world hanging on a thread" that seeks players to save the world from "a powerful entity looming from beyond." How you do that is entirely up to you: exploring, harvesting, crafting, and combat are all on the menu, and can be enjoyed solo or in co-op as you wish. Developer EP Games promises "an immersive and comprehensive gameplay experience that will satisfy every player's tastes."

The new title seems to take an Enshrouded-like approach to the survival genre. Rather than dropping players into a hostile world and having them achieve the simple goal of "survival," Oppidum focuses on the narrative aspect, which features "a main story, side quests, environmental storytelling, and diverse supporting characters."

At the same time, the player freedom typical of many survival games is still present: players are free to "explore the open world, go at their own pace, and discover secrets hidden throughout Insur."

While promising a lot, the new gameplay trailer looks pretty good, and Oppidum has already done some playtesting and released a demo at Steam Next Fest in February. This is also not EP Games' first rodeo: CEO, lead programmer, and scenario designer Daniel Barba is the chief technology officer on "Temtem," and art director and technical artist Adrián Andrés served as art lead on the film. The studio's previous releases include "Queendoom" and "A Gummy's Life," which were not well received by a large number of players.

Incidentally, an oppidum is a large fortified settlement or town common among the Celts of the first and second centuries BC. Anyone who knows what an opidum is, without needing to consult Wikipedia, will almost certainly assume that this new game is some sort of spin-off of Total War. As part of an endeavor called Insur, you will build and expand your camp using resources and blueprints found throughout the game.

Oppidum does not yet have a release date, but it is currently on the wishlist on Steam and is expected to be available sometime in 2024.
