Two great GPUs, two pre-Prime Day deals on graphics cards, one tough choice

For a difference of only $10, these are two great graphics cards.

The less expensive of the two is Gigabyte's take on Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4070. It is clocked higher than the reference design (2,565 MHz vs. 2,475 MHz), but the 4% overclock will hardly be noticeable in games. The rather large heatsink and cooler require ample space in the PC case. [Instead of the 12VHPWR power connector that many RTX 40 series cards have, Gigabyte has a standard 8-pin PCIe connector. Ada Lovelace chips are also very power efficient, so there is no need to purchase a new power supply unit unless it is very old and basic.

In addition to excellent ray tracing capabilities, full support for all DLSS 3.5 features (AI upscaling, frame generation, and ray tracing denoising) means that the RTX 4070 can power any game. 1080p and 1440p games with ease and can even handle 4K depending on the settings used.

Acer's Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) is a graphics card that uses the same GPU as the powerful Radeon RX 7900 XTX, but with many shaders disabled and some memory cache chiplets disabled. However, it is still a very powerful graphics card and is generally faster than the RTX 4070 in most games. [AMD is working on shader-based FSR 3.1 upscaling and improved frame generation algorithms, but not as much as Nvidia's DLSS. In some games, the difference is barely noticeable, while in others, FSR provides ample performance gains, but at the expense of visual fidelity.

AMD's RDNA 3 processors are also not as energy efficient as the RTX 40 series, with the RX 7900 GRE consuming up to 60W more power than the RTX 4070. Offsetting this a bit is the fact that Acer's Nitro model boasts a 7% overclock compared to the reference design.

At launch, the RTX 4070 had an MSRP of $599, but now that it has been superseded by the RTX 4070 Super (no pun intended), the price has dropped to the point where it can be purchased for such a price. the RX 7900 GRE has not yet been superseded by anything but still, it's great to see a healthy chunk cut off from the price tag.

Sure, $500 is a lot of money to spend on a graphics card “only,” but these are both very capable pixel pushers. If you haven't upgraded your GPU in a few years, you'll be shocked at how powerful it is.
