Facepunch Studios celebrates its 15th birthday with a half-price sale.

General
Facepunch Studios celebrates its 15th birthday with a half-price sale.

As a Birmingham native myself, I have a patriotic attachment to Facepunch Studios. This British developer has produced some of the most iconic hits in PC gaming: “Garry's Mod” changed the face of my YouTube recommendations for games over the years, and “Rust” keeps players running around as naked blokes, smashing trees with rocks! ...

Facepunch also turned 15 earlier this summer, a pretty big milestone, especially in this industry. To celebrate this decade and a half, the studio is holding a huge sale. Now through July 22 on Steam, Facepunch's entire library, DLC, and soundtrack are available for 50% off.

There is a PvP survival crafting game called Rust, currently on sale for $19.99/£17.49. The game has sold over 17 million copies since its release over a decade ago and regularly appears on Steam's bestseller list.

While I have never played Rust myself, I have enjoyed many hours of muffled voice chat as my friends built bases and formed alliances with strangers. We gave the game an 80 in our 2018 Rust review, and Luke Winkie wrote: “I think everyone should at least get a taste of Rust. I can't think of many other games with such an uncompromising worldview, and I am utterly fascinated by how little faith I have in our ability to get along. Maybe we can build a utopia on this island! We could build a utopia on this island! ...... I love that Facepunch is dangling that possibility in front of us.

You can also get Garry's Mod for $4.99/£3.49 if it's not already in your Steam library. The game has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the PC-only game that has sold over 22 million copies in the last 18 years, the originator of huge user-created game mods and MOs such as Prop Hunt, Jailbreak, and Trouble in Terrorist Town. The game is truly an enduring classic, with constant possibilities thanks to its community. It is also home to famous machinima like Shelf-Life and Haven.

It's a lot of work just to push out one legacy game, but Facepunch has done it twice. Check out our interview with founder Garry Newman over the years. From how “complete accidents” led to some of Garry's Mod's most interesting features to the immense freedom Rust offers players, it's worth checking out all the great things Newman and team have accomplished over the years.

Looking to the future, Facepunch's next game, s&box, is also in the works. Initially marked as the spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, it is now an independent work in its own right.
