A former developer who worked on the 2013 Deadpool action game says it couldn't possibly cost more than $100 million to produce, despite years of rumors and even Wikipedia claiming otherwise.
Chris Baker, a former developer who worked in Marvel's game division at the time of Deadpool's release, wrote to "X" about the rumored nine-figure budget, "I'm not sure how much more money it will cost. People insert this fact into conversations about High Moon Studios' games, but there is really no reliable source for that information. Wikipedia's page on the most expensive games to develop cites a 2015 Gamespot article, but also has no source.
Baker disputed this claim to X after the release of a retrospective video of the Deadpool game he worked on for years. 'I didn't know the actual budget, but $100 million was at least GTA-level at the time. And he's right: according to a 2008 Times profile of Grand Theft Auto 4 producer Leslie Benzies, he estimated the budget to be around $100 million.
The in-game joke about going way over budget is stacked with counters that rack up millions of dollars in seconds. Given the dead ends involved in trying to get to the bottom of this, I wouldn't be surprised if he is right. All it takes is for someone on a forum somewhere to present this as a fun fact about the project, and the Internet canonized it, regardless of its authenticity.
We don't seem to know the real amount of money spent on what turned out to be a fairly half-baked superhero game (PC Gamer gave it 60%), but I don't think people will stop bringing this up when they reminisce, at least as long as Wikipedia keeps saying it's true.
