After three years, "Chivalry 2" moves into maintenance mode; developers decide they have released enough updates to make it "content and feature complete".

Any good historical materialist will tell you that feudalism doesn't last long. So it may come as no surprise that the good folks at Torn Banner Studios have announced that after three glorious years, their online medieval war sim is now "full of content and features." That's right: Chivalry is dead.

Specifically, it's "Chivalry 2." Oh, that's okay, it's not dead. I just can't pass up an opportunity like this. A better way to put it is that it's over: the "Regicide" update in May was "the 11th and final content," said Torn Banner in a Steam update.

"At the game's launch, we promised to at least double the size of 'Chivalry 2' after launch by adding new maps, modes, weapons, features, and experiences," the studio said, "significantly increasing the game's content, features, and quality beyond our original goals We have more than met [the goal] by making the game's content, functionality, and quality significantly better than our original goal," the studio deemed. As if to underscore that point, and perhaps to encourage players not to be too upset by this, they link to the Trello roadmap of updates that have shipped.

This works in a way: a quick check of the Chivalry 2 subreddit reveals that the community is in a mixed mood. User Noraver_Tidaer posts, "I feel like this game had so much more potential and it's all over in one fell swoop," and "I'm not motivated to jump on board when I know the player count is slowly dwindling."

Others are more pessimistically accepting. Da_fire_cracka writes, "I bought this game on sale for $20, yet the game has released countless massive free updates and provided nearly 1000 hours of great gameplay."

"Ever since I got this game I can't stop playing it," agrees Ndem28, "I don't regret playing it at all."

Torn Banner has not yet finished Chivalry. This is not the end of the Chivalry franchise," the studio wrote at the end of its Steam announcement. We are focused on making sure that when the next Chivalry title is released, it will be one that will blow players away." Furthermore, of course, the developers will continue to work on maintaining "Chivalry 2," but there just won't be any major updates in the future.

For now, Torn Banner seems to be focusing all of its efforts on "No More Room In Hell 2," but we'd be surprised if "Chivalry the Third" isn't released some day. A player named ForlornJosh writes, "It will be 5-10 years from now."
