An updated version of the 2011 3D platformer Sonic Generations, Sonic x Shadow Generations, will be released later this year. However, in response to fan demand, Sega has announced that it will continue to sell the currently available "Sonic Generations Collection" bundled with other older Sonic games.
"On September 9, the original version of Sonic Generations will no longer be sold separately on Steam. However, in response to player feedback, we will offer a way to play the original version of the game. The original version of Sonic Generations will continue to be available as part of the new Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle, which includes other classic Sonic titles on Steam," Sega wrote in a FAQ posted on Steam.
This is probably for the best. Despite the excitement around the updated "Sonic X Shadow Generations," and game preservation concerns aside, "Sonic Generations" has had a decade of modding and fan work. It is, after all, one of the few good 3D Sonic games.
Its new bundle includes Sonic Generations Collection, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2, Sonic 3D Blast, and Sonic Spinball are included. Retail price is $59.99, but "bundle contents and pricing may vary by region."
You can find the Sonic Generations Collection on Steam, at least until it is delisted on September 9.
