When did 1000W PSUs become so affordable?

Did I miss the memo, I thought 1000W PSUs were still something to spend a few hundred dollars on, but you can actually get them much cheaper. This is a big difference from the days when these high-wattage boxes were selling for above-average prices due to cryptocurrency mining and the surge in power demand.

The PSU that got my attention for this is the Super Flower Leadex Platinum SE, a 1000W power supply with an 80 Plus Platinum efficiency rating, which is marked down from $250 to $125 at Newegg.

You may not be familiar with the Super Flower brand, but today it is becoming a bit better known as a power supply brand. Importantly, the company is not actually a new manufacturer. It used to manufacture as an OEM for other brands like EVGA. In fact, one of EVGA's most attractive PSUs of all time, the G2, was manufactured by Super Flower.

This particular PSU comes with a 10-year warranty, offering the peace of mind that has come to be expected from high-quality PSUs these days. It also comes in a clean white finish, which will look quite sleek in the build I am currently assembling. It is, of course, fully modular, but one drawback is that it does not come with the latest 12VHPWR connectors (or even the newer 12V-2x6).

But what impressed me most about this unit is its efficiency. The box bears the 80 Plus Platinum badge, which means it is one of the most efficient PSUs available: at 50% load, it is 92% efficient at 115V and 94% efficient at 230V.

It is worth noting that we are moving to a new evaluation system for power supplies led by Cybenetics, including Corsair. However, the 80 Plus one is still valid.

This PSU is $140 cheaper than Be Quiet's excellent Pure Power 12 M with an 80 Plus Gold rating, though. It's much cheaper than the comparable Corsair HX1000i at $235 - although we have to say this is a pretty good PSU; the Super Flower is not as new or flashy as some, but its reliable, no-frills design at this price is unquestionable.
