The reception of the movie "Borderlands" makes me nostalgic for the days when video game tie-ins were not only half-hearted, but reliably awful. Simply put, people hated the film. Words like "lifeless," "obnoxious," and "baffling" are flying around, but the only good news is that a single positive review raised the film's Rotten Tomatoes score from 0% to 3%.
In other words, it's a bit of a mess. Because it turns out that the name of a key production staff member behind one of the main characters in "Borderlands" is not credited. Robbie Reed, who goes by the convenient handle "Robbie Reed the Rigger," says he worked on the rigging of the film's claptrap model for all of five months. As for Claptrap, he is arguably best known for "Borderlands."
"This time three years ago, I was rigging the CG assets for Claptrap for the movie Borderlands. Neither I nor the artist who modeled him (with whom I had been working all along) got credit for the film.
Reed says this is the first time this has happened to him, so he is "extraordinarily lucky," but nevertheless, "It just breaks my heart that it was the last film I worked on at the studio that finally broke that chain of events. And for an important character."
According to IMDB's complete cast and crew list, eight riggers from various disciplines (electrical, visual effects, stunt) are credited on "Borderlands," but Reed's name is not among them.
The claptrap model Reed worked on appears to be the one used in the final film, and Reed speculates that the reason for the omission may be that he and the artist left their previous studio in 2021 and "it took so long for the movie to come out." Someone has been trying to put the blame on Randy Pitchford (!) is trying to put the blame on the "one person who is responsible for this," Reed stresses that this is a "common problem in the industry. It is definitely not any one person's fault, and it is wrong to suggest that it is."
He also notes that "the industry is not in the business of making movies, and it is not the industry's fault.
The film Borderlands is an action comedy with a stellar cast: Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Lee Curtis, Florian Munteanu, and Cate Blanchett. Blanchett has even said that if all she did was gardening, she would have taken the role thanks to "Cobit's Madness." Naturally, PC Gamer took note of this and today sent our intrepid volunteer, Joshua Wallens, to see the film.
