New "Darksiders" in Development: "The Four Horsemen Ride Again

Six years after "Darksiders 3" (and five years after the wonderful but overlooked spin-off "Darksiders Genesis"), I was beginning to think that THQ Nordic had given up on this series. Apparently not, as a new teaser tells us that we should be "ready to get back on board."

The video, which premiered at the end of the THQ Nordic Showcase 2024, shows the Charred Council (the hot-headed rockers who command the Four Horsemen) looking the same as ever, but without much substance. However, the Xbox Wire blog seems to confirm that this is an indication of a new installment: "It won't be long before the next installment in the Darksiders series is revealed, but for now, know this: ...... The Four Horsemen will be riding again."

Does this mean that all four will be featured, rather than focusing on one or two as in the last film? Perhaps the four could switch between them, or even play together in cooperative play.

The teaser also has the Gunfire Games logo, so perhaps they are developing this new game. Frankly, this is the studio that created Darksiders 3, a game that was not only severely lacking in charm, but was also trying to pivot to a soul-like feeling that was at odds with its predecessor. I would hate to see that become the direction of the series again.

But that was a long time ago, and in the years since, the studio has released the "Remnant" series. Let's hope that Gunfire Games, older and wiser, will make it even better.

Personally, though, I wish Airship Syndicate had been in charge. Not only did that team create Genesis, a smaller but more faithful sequel to 3, but it was founded by members of the original creative team of the first two films (including artist Joe Madureira, who conceived the series' distinctive look and style).

However, we can't always get what we want, so is Gunfire Games. At this point, we can only hope that THQ Nordic can find some new groove for "Darksiders," whatever that may be. After the collapse of the original THQ and Vigil Games, it's struggling to build momentum, but it still feels attached and personally I'd love to go back to slaying demons at the end of the world.
