The film “Borderlands” was released in theaters. Despite director Joshua Warren's concerns, the film seems to be on its way to a full-blown box office bomb, with an opening weekend box office of only $8.8 million in the US ($16.5 million worldwide), not bad for a film that cost about $150 million to make.
While it is hard to glean anything good from these results, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford has found a positive side.
“That means you like what my friends and I are doing with the ‘Borderlands’ video game even more than the biggest and best cast and crew filmmakers on the planet do,” Pitchford tweeted over the weekend. 'It's a great honor. The four of us are working exceptionally hard on our next film.”
(The “four” is not a misspelling, but a bit of wordplay poking fun at the almost-confirmed “Borderlands 4.”)
He repeated this sentiment in a reply tweet a bit later: “My team and I do a better job of creating characters, telling stories, and making entertainment than this shitty, unbelievable cast and crew of some of the biggest and best filmmakers on the planet. [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] Echoing comments made by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick last week, Pitchford said the financial loss of the film will be suffered by the film studio, not Gearbox: “So, if the studio loses money, they're not going to make another movie. I'm not really affected by that, except that they might not want to.”
I dare to dream, but given the inevitable drop in ticket sales in the second week, I think the odds of “Borderlands 2” being released are slim. Perhaps it would be best to.
