You Can't Pay for Free": Mega-MOD ‘Fallout London’ Developer Plans to Establish Indie Studio

Fallout London is a machine that the developers themselves admit was “duct-taped together” but is impressive nonetheless. News writer Joshua Wolens has a blast with this Fallout 4 giant mod when not booting into his desktop.

With the success of Fallout London, the developers have big plans for the future: as the BBC interviewed Team Folon's Dean Carter, the team behind Fallout London, has expressed interest in taking the team that created it from avid modders to an indie studio He has expressed interest in turning it into a

“As much as we like being a free project ...... free doesn't pay our bills. What's good for us is that so many people who enjoyed it donated.” For legal reasons, we generally cannot ask for cash for mods unless we are working through an official storefront.

“What we did is pour it into Team Folon: and hopefully we can start our own indie game company.

As an RPG lover myself (assuming Folon doesn't pivot to a farming simulator), this is pretty exciting news. One more developer making good stuff for one of my favorite genres, RPGs, can only be a good thing. But it will probably be a while yet. It takes years to make a game, and switching gears from modding to full-blown game development is a massive project.

Nevertheless, Carter is excited, telling the BBC that the team will be able to “come up with our own ideas, make our own games, and work with the community without having to consult our superiors.”

That particular topic seems to be a point of frustration. As Carter revealed at the beginning of the interview, Team Folon has not received any communication from Bethesda. We have heard from others in the industry, but not from Bethesda itself.

Bethesda was under no obligation to alert them about the next-gen update, but I'm surprised to hear that there wasn't a single word of praise at Fallout London's. It just seems like a win, but oh well. If the actual former Speaker of the House is in attendance, I think that's a well-deserved recognition.
