Content disposal in the wake of XDefiant's closure is enormous, unprecedented, and deadly.

Following the recent announcement that XDefiant's servers will close in June 2025, Ubisoft released the last major content patch for the game yesterday. Not only does the patch include all of Season 3's content, but it also includes all of the upcoming content that has already been developed for the game, which may be a world first for a live service. Among them are 13 new maps, three new factions, and a skin for the game that was likely not fully finished before it was thrown into the funeral pyre of XDefiant.

X user Nick “ProReborn” perused the game's menu and made an interesting discovery about the additions. The new Assassin faction surprisingly has three characters that have never appeared in any game in the series (why no Ezio?). The new Wolf team is from Ghost Recon: Breakpoint and features fun skins like Gold Thin, Frostbite, and “TEMPORARY-Sidney-80s Aerobic-name”. Meanwhile, the Omega Force team representing Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has only one character: the Mallet Man (no, I've never heard of him).

Some of the new maps are beautiful to look at, such as Killstar Temple, which looks like it came straight out of Unreal Tournament, and its counterpart, the vibrant, mushroom-like Enchanted Forest. Ubisoft has been hiding some really nice things from XDefiant players, with people on Reddit and YouTube saying that this update feels like a new game.

All of this is a bit odd. The fact that there are characters and skins that are not properly labeled also suggests that the developers may have just thrown something in progress in there that may never have seen the light of day. On the other hand, for a game that was criticized for its lack of content, it is frustrating to see how much great stuff was put on the back burner.
