As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, a movie about esports called "1Up" is currently in production. Ellen Page plays the team's coach and Paris Berelc is the lead, a young player who quits her mixed team to start a women-only team. Directed by Kyle Newman ("Fanboys") and written by children's TV show writer Julia Yorks, "1Up" is described by the Hollywood Reporter as "in the vein of 'Pitch Perfect,' but set in the world of e-sports with Gamergate as a backdrop.
Everyone is a fan of the game.
I don't know about you, but I was thrilled by the phrase "in the vein of Pitch Perfect" and then thrilled by the phrase "set against the backdrop of Gamergate," making me unusually thrilled twice. But perhaps this description is deceptive. Ellen Page is a fine actor (you should see "Umbrella Academy") and she endured her role in David Cage's game, so perhaps she knows enough about the gaming world to choose a project that handles its subject matter with care. [The story centers on a female gamer named Vivian Lee. Vivian quits her college e-sports team and chooses to endure sexism from her male peers. But when her scholarship is in jeopardy, she is forced to form a varsity-level women's team that can compete with the men; with the help of an enigmatic coach, brought back into the spotlight by the GamerGate scandal, this young woman is not a skilled enough gamer to kick the gamer's butt. She gathers a group of delinquents.
1Up will be produced in Toronto in November. No word on what game will be featured, but maybe it will be an "Overwatch" knockoff designed by the same people who make the outrageous fake shooters teenagers play on cop shows? One can only hope.
