Developer Tarn Adams has given Steam a first look at the actual dwarves in Dwarf Fortress with new graphics. The Dwarf has a face and a body. Behold!
Dwarves will be available both in color-coded mode by profession and in actual color mode. In other words, the fisher dwarf with the beard above chooses the clothes he wears and has an accurately modeled beard style, but is colored blue based on his work. The mason of the same civilization chooses the style of dress, but wears a white dress with a shaved head based on his work. Fashionable! This is because the civilization of the Dwarf Fortress has its preferred fashions, hairstyles, and colors, and the dwarves' outfits are based on their random generation.
In actual color mode, Adams said, dwarven clothing is "much more tasteless" before the dye industry was launched, no matter what color the material actually is; Adams also showed bronze-armored and iron-armored warrior dwarves, with equipment suitable for in-game gear. The iron-armored dwarves wear beautiful teal-dyed cloaks and headscarves.
Dwarf Fortress is being released on Steam for the first time and will be part of a graphical upgrade that will be real money, not free. The graphics will be upgraded as part of that. (A few months ago, I spoke with Tarn Adams about the nice new look of Dwarf Fortress and saw it in action.
