The next generation SSD war has begun.

Just a few weeks ago, Sabrent announced its first 4TB capacity PCIe. 4.0 drive, and now it has followed it up with the fastest M.2 SSD in the galaxy, the new Rocket 4 Plus. With this, Sabrent is establishing itself as a genuine high-end competitor to Samsung in the SSD storage arena.

This is another quiet announcement that really should be shouted from the mountaintops. But instead of proudly announcing it, Sabret launched a product page (via Tom's Hardware) shortly after Samsung made a similar announcement about its new 980 Pro series.

Sabrent's Rocket 4 Plus is rated to deliver the same 7,000 MB/sec read speed, but leaves the 980 Pro behind with a write speed of 6,850 MB/sec. While this difference is hardly an issue when playing games, the difference in write performance becomes more meaningful when copying large files or doing heavy-duty video editing.

Like the 980 Pro, the Rocket 4 Plus is a PCIe. 4.0 SSD and requires an AMD X570 or B550 motherboard to fully utilize its rated speed. These are the only two chipsets that support PCIe 4.0 at this time.

Sabrent offers new SSDs in 2TB, 1TB, and 500GB capacities. All combine triple-level cell (TLC) NAND flash memory chips with a Phison E18 controller, which according to Phison supports drives up to 8TB in capacity and delivers speeds of up to 7,000MB/s for both read and write Both read and write speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s are possible.

The Rocket 4 Plus series also features a robust cooling solution. It is a layered design consisting of an aluminum tray that wraps around the M.2 module, which itself is thermally taped at the top and bottom. On top of that is an aluminum heatsink, and on top of that are copper heat coils. In addition, it has a heat spreader.

No price or release date has been mentioned yet. For reference, Sabrent's 2TB Rocket (5,000 MB/sec read, 4,400 MB/sec write) sells for $399.99 on Amazon, the 1TB model for $199.98, and the 500GB model for $119.98.
