SnowRunner's Rift update is now available, adding new maps, quality of life improvements, bug fixes, and more.

A new map has been added to SnowRunner, the successor to Spintires and MudRunner, with the latest update, the Rift Update.

The new map is located in the Taymyr region and, as expected, is called Rift. The lack of snow is compensated for by the verticality, and steep cliffs must be maneuvered somehow. Nevertheless, SnowRunner's biggest problem has not been solved. Of the three regions currently featured in the game, only one has the snow promised in the title. Fortunately, the update features a huge number of quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes, not only in the maps, but in all basic areas of the game: the UI has been tweaked, the annoying bug that caused the terrain simulation (a defining feature of the entire series) to stop fixed, the ability to swap regions when playing co-op with friends, and various graphical elements have been improved.

As an important side note, when loading a new update, you may notice that you cannot access your previous saves. This is a known issue and is being fixed, but if you are impatient and need some Rift-like goodness right now, you can manually reactivate your saves (via RockPaperShotgun).

SnowRunner is great, even if it sometimes struggles to stand out from MudRunner. Every win is a small but hard-won game. Spending 15 minutes to move just a couple of meters may sound frustrating on the surface, but when you're in the driver's seat shooting winches into trees within range, every centimeter feels like a hurdle overcome. I sincerely hope there will be more snow in the next update, but even so, Rift looks like an interesting map.
