"The Witcher 3" is a huge game, but inevitably there are many parts that get cut. One of the most spectacular was a scene involving Siri, a frozen lake, and an ill-fated enemy.
Lead author Jakub Szamałek, who spoke to VG24/7, said he was inspired by a scene from one of the books, Tower of Swallows, but it proved too difficult to recreate.
"We had planned a sequence where Siri fights the enemy while skating on a frozen lake. However, preparing that sequence turned out to be very complex. For example, we could not easily record the necessary gameplay animations." Imagine recording motion capture of a skating swordsman.
Those with a good memory may remember that it was mentioned in an early preview, but unfortunately it was never intended: in Blood and Wine's There Can Be Only One quest, you can walk on water as Geralt.
Elsewhere in the Q&A, Szamałek regrets that so little time was devoted to Ciri. 'She is an amazingly rich and complex character. For obvious reasons, she's not in the game for two-thirds of the game. But hey, maybe she will return in the future."
This is not the first time CD Projekt Red has given notice that they may not end up with Ciri. While it would be great to see her in the spotlight, I think CDPR made the right decision not to cram an even more complex protagonist into a game that is simply huge. What is needed is an entire game dedicated to her adventures so she might be able to skate.
