It still happens more often than we'd like, when we find a seemingly attractive bargain on a gaming laptop only to realize that the manufacturer has skimped on storage. Eurocom must have heard our groans, because the new Nightsky RX 15 can be configured with a whopping 16TB of SSD storage.
According to Eurocom, this is a world record for a "lightweight" laptop. Weighing in at 5.5 pounds, it is certainly lighter than some gaming laptops out there, especially those that fall into the desktop alternative category; MSI's GS65 Stealth Thin is only 4.14 pounds.
Still, that's an impressive amount of storage for a consumer laptop. Unfortunately, a buyer on a sensible budget would find it cost-prohibitive to purchase 16TB in this case; to achieve 16TB, the Sabrent Rocket 4TB NVMe SSD ($2,083 each) and the Micron 5100 Enterprise 8TB SSD ( SATA) ($3,945) to configure the Nightsky RX 15.
Folks, that's a total of $8,111 for storage alone, and it's really puzzling that Eurocom is charging so much for these SSDs. I double checked and there was no gold or platinum used.
At least the Sabrent Rocket model is fast, though not the fastest. Sequential read performance is up to 3,000 MB/s and sequential write performance is up to 1,400 MB/s.
Outside of the storage configuration, the Nightsky RX can be equipped with 15 different types of high-end hardware. We did some window shopping to see what is possible with unlimited funds. Here is how it looked:
The total came to $11,967. Upgrade options are a bit limited, with the fastest available RAM being DDR4-3000 and only two GPUs to choose from: RTX 2070 and GTX 1660 Ti.
A more sensible configuration (16GB RAM instead of 32GB, 500GB SSD) brings the price down to $3,092, which is still expensive. Part of the premium is the 15.6-inch OLED display with 4K resolution and 600 nits brightness. Still, at $3,000, this product is more than a bargain.
The Nightsky RX 15 is available now.
