Bethesda's fix for "Fallout 76" inventory theft is generous and complex.

Last month, many players in "Fallout 76" were found to be wearing no lower half of their bodies. Bethesda was able to fix this exploit fairly quickly, but regaining lost gear was another matter entirely.

For some reason, Bethesda was simply unable to put replacement gear in players' packs, and promised to eventually figure out a way to compensate players for their losses. The solution was revealed late last week by redditors including JedediahJedi and Boavisteiro (via Kotaku).

Apparently, it is really impossible for Bethesda to restore a lost inventory item, so what they are doing instead is giving players a clone of the pre-stolen character with the name changed." Once restored, this character will have the entire inventory of items, gear, and scrap (100% of yours) that you owned on December 20, 2019." the email sent to Impact players said." Additionally, we will offer you 8250 atoms to help you in your adventure."

The clumsiness doesn't end there. Players who want to merge their pre- and post-theft inventories (as most players will) will need to request a "Secure Trade Transfer Service" from Bethesda customer service.

I think the reward is reasonable: a bundle of 5000 atoms sells for $40 at the Microsoft Store. What I find interesting is the completely inefficient process required to make it happen. A scripted idiot can steal all your stuff, but Bethesda, the major game studio that actually makes "Fallout 76," can't just pop it back in, and merging characters literally requires the same kind of You have to meet him digitally.
