The Hearthstone Tavern seems like the perfect place for impossibly cozy, friendly card battles, but our eyes are always on the board. A VR version that allows us to do a bit more than just play cards by the tavern seems very appealing, and Blizzard seems to agree and has developed a VR prototype of Hearthstone.
In a chat with PowerUp, lead effects artist Hadidjah Chamberlin said the duo of developers created the prototype at an internal Blizzard event.
"They were actually prototyping a VR version of Hearthstone at the time. 'We could walk around the bar and sit down with somebody and play the game. But it didn't go any further. 'We only had two weeks, so we just got to be able to throw cards at the table and flip the table over.'
As for catharsis after a shitty game, flipping the table would be the first thing Hearthstone would do if they released a proper VR spin-off. I doubt they would. Of course, I wouldn't think of doing that, and the fact that I knocked over my opponent's model in Warhammer was all accidental. I'm just clumsy.
Blizzard doesn't seem to have any plans to make that happen right now. Principal Narrative Designer Dave Kosak said it has been discussed, but he thinks players would prefer something simple, like using a tablet. Indeed, it seems like a cool novelty, something that would bring you back to classic Hearthstone after a week of play.
Alternatively, one could play the Tabletop Simulator. This simulator allows players to create their own games, so they can explore Hearthstone game adaptations or create their own. In addition, they can even turn the tables in VR.
