Doom Eternal game director Hugo Martin highlighted a number of new and re-emerging demons in a NoClip documentary, highlighting new "chess pieces" that threaten players. Many of the new enemies appear particularly cunning, forcing players to adopt new playstyles to defeat them. For example, the Carcass, one of Doom's best weapons, throws down an anti-rocket shield to confuse you. As far as we can tell, "as far as we can tell, it's cool to frustrate you," says Martin, who introduces the Pain Elemental, Arachnotron, Archvile, and Helified Soldier as Doom 2's old creatures. Doom Eternal's new creatures are. Whiplash, Tentacles, Marauder, Doom Hunter, and Carcass.

While Doom Eternal continues to have surprisingly subtle game design principles for a game about chainsawing demons, it will be hard to follow in 2016's Doom's footsteps.
