"Here Be Dragons" is a whimsical-looking game that pays homage to the strange drawings on the edge of the map and a dice-battling puzzle game. The game follows the journey of a bunch of quirky, no-nonsense guys who are trying to kill every single monster in the sea, or something like that. Perhaps it's because all the characters are inexplicably crazy, but at least the game and I agree that Christopher Columbus was a jerk. Anyway, the game is a turn-based battle game in which you use dice to activate your fleet and use its power to win battles against monsters, pirates, and sometimes regular authorities. Perhaps most uniquely, since the game is told by a crazy crew, you can collect ink and rewrite the battle results and dice rolls to change the story as it is written.
I played a bit of the release build and it is a pretty tough game. It stretched my ability to grasp and utilize the mechanics quickly. The tactical conundrum of whether to kill the whale or the fisherman first was rather fun, and while fans of more recent games like "Dicey Dungeons" and "One Deck Dungeon" will love it, it is a more story-driven experience than those rogue-like games! Here Be Dragons will be released on Steam on January 30 for $14.99. Here's the trailer:
