Perhaps the biggest touchstone of pop culture to come out of Netflix's The Witcher is not the battle or the bathtub, but the ballad: "Toss a Coin to Your Witcher" is a meme, at least one mod, and some surprising across a wide range of styles inspired covers. The song's creators, Giona Ostinelli and Sonya Belousova, recently told GamesRadar that they have put together a collection of songs in a variety of styles for possible inclusion in the show, including a rap version
.
"There were five or six versions of the songs I wrote for 'Jaskaiser. I wanted Lauren to hear songs in a variety of styles and genres." I wanted Lauren to hear songs in a variety of genres, from very medieval and Renaissance to very modern."
A rap version of this song did not make it into the show, but Jasquier's performance is very contemporary, which seems surprising in a show that is ostensibly a sword-and-sorcery fantasy story. But that, too, seems intentional: Belousova equates Jasquier with the Freddie Mercury of the Witcher world, and the music is intended to represent his growth from a mere singer to a full-fledged rock star.
"So the song 'You Think You're Safe,' which I sing when I first meet his character, is very simple, just his voice and lute. When he sings "Toss a Coin To Your Witcher," musically, you can see his journey from a speakeasy to a continental rock star."
"Toss a Coin To Your Witcher," rapped by Ostinelli and Belousova, remains unreleased, but she says she may put it out someday "as a bonus track." If you're in the mood for that, this remix by Mega Ran is pretty good. Personally, I can't get enough of this:
