Dreamhack and ESL have signed a new three-year deal with Blizzard to create new ESL Pro Tours for StarCraft 2 and Warcraft 3: Reforged. ESL Pro Tour StarCraft 2 will take over the StarCraft 2 World Championship Series (but with rankings and qualifying based on the StarCraft 2 World Championship Series format), while Warcraft 3: Reforged will be built on a "new competition platform."
"We are proud that StarCraft 2 and Warcraft 3 are home to two of the most passionate, historic, and dedicated communities in esports history. "Both ESL and DreamHack have been longtime partners for our esports and we look forward to providing the stability inherent in a long-term relationship for players, talent, content creators, and fans to keep these communities thriving for years to come.
StarCity is a long-standing partner of StarCity.
The first season of the StarCraft 2 Tour will consist of seven tournaments, including two Intel Extreme Masters and four Dreamhack tournaments, as well as the Masters Championship final in Katowice 2021, with rankings and qualifying The format is based on Blizzard's WCS system, and the Warcraft 3: Reforged tour will be smaller, consisting of one ESL and three Dreamhack tournaments, leading up to a final tournament later this year. The new tour will offer a prize pool of more than $4.6 million, including more than $1.2 million in prize money from each year of the StarCraft 2 Pro Tour.
The difference in the size of the tour and prize pool reflects the game itself: StarCraft 2 is one of the most established and durable games in professional esports competition (this is the 2011 Intel Extreme European Championship where we are talking about this game), and Warcraft 3: Reforged, although a remake, is a new professional title that will not be released until the end of this month.
The move to ESL and Dreamhack means the end of the WCS mobile app (which apparently closed on December 31, 2019) and the WCS site itself will go offline later this year; Blizzard is "actively working on finalizing our Korea plans for 2020 and beyond." but more information on the new ESL Pro Tour StarCraft 2 can be found at starcraft2.com.
