Americans over the age of 50 are increasingly interested in and playing games, and the population of older gamers is growing significantly; according to an AARP survey, there were about 40.2 million older gamers in 216; today there are 50.6 million. More than one-third of these gamers say they are constantly trying new games, and fewer are looking to their children and grandchildren to help them find new games. Nearly half of these gamers play games daily. Thirty-three percent play online games, a third of them with strangers. Most of these gamers play puzzle games, logic games, word games, card games, and video board games.
The only two statistically significant changes in platform use among older gamers are PCs and mobile devices, including tablets. The number of older gamers playing on cell phones, tablets, and other devices increased from 57% to 73%; the share of those playing on PCs decreased from 59% in 2016 to 47% in 2019, most of which was lost among those switching from laptops to tablets. Mobile and PC players still outnumber those playing on other gaming systems; no platform recorded more than 13% penetration in 2019, and this is for all gaming consoles combined.
